In a powerful call to action for community pride and economic resilience, Mayor of Waterford Cllr Jason Murphy, alongside Waterford Chamber President Kevin Doolin, Dungarvan & West Waterford Chamber President Oren Byrne, and a host of business owners, has officially launched the Think Waterford First Accreditation initiative.

This new programme is designed to recognise and celebrate individuals, businesses, and organisations who actively promote Waterford, at home and abroad. Whether you're a sole trader, a multinational, a school, a charity, or even a proud Waterford expat, the message is clear, if you’re supporting Waterford, we want to acknowledge you.

Recognising Everyday Champions
The initiative is rooted in inclusivity and pride. Applicants are invited to reflect on how they contribute to Waterford's community spirit, through local sourcing, cultural support, volunteering, regional advocacy, and more.

To make recognition accessible to all, participants complete a simple self-assessment to highlight their Waterford-focused efforts. Depending on their level of engagement, they may receive official accreditation acknowledging their contribution. Recognition includes:

  • A printed certificate
  • Accreditation graphics for digital and physical use
  • A listing on the upcoming www.ThinkWaterfordFirst.ie website
  • Promotion via Waterford Chamber’s social and media channels
  • Pride Without Barriers
There are no deadlines, no fees, and no restrictions. The programme is open year-round to everyone, inside or outside the county, who demonstrates a genuine connection to Waterford.

Mayor Jason Murphy described the campaign as “a vital step in recognising the quiet champions who put Waterford on the map every day, whether by supporting local jobs, speaking proudly of our county abroad, or simply choosing Waterford first in their daily lives. Together let’s put Waterford where it belongs, first.”

Building a Movement
“This is more than just a certificate, it’s a movement,” added Oren Byrne. “We want to inspire every corner of our community to think Waterford first, from the office boardroom to the school playground.”
Waterford Chamber President Kevin Doolin highlighted the long-term potential: “By showcasing the people and organisations who embody the Waterford spirit, we’re laying the foundation for a stronger, more connected regional economy.”

An Extra Honour for Outstanding Contributors
Those who demonstrate the highest level of commitment may receive Gold-level recognition — and with it, eligibility for the new “Think Waterford First” Award at the Waterford Business Awards in November.
