South East Technological University (SETU) welcomed leading international experts to Waterford for a major forum on exercise and cancer, highlighting the region’s growing reputation as a centre of excellence in health and exercise research.
The event brought together globally recognised researchers alongside local clinicians, research students, and cancer survivors to explore how exercise can improve cancer treatment and recovery. Among the keynote speakers were Dr Ciarán Fairman, Assistant Professor at the University of South Carolina, Professor Kathryn Schmitz, Professor at the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, and Professor Anna Campbell, Edinburgh Napier University, with presentations also from Professor Michael Harrison, Head of Sport and Exercise Science at SETU and Dr Tina-Thea Nielsen, University of Southern Denmark.
Welcoming delegates to the city, Cllr Adam Wyse, Metropolitan Mayor of Waterford, highlighted the importance of research in improving patient care and praised SETU’s contribution to sport and exercise science.
Throughout the forum, speakers shared compelling evidence that exercise can play a vital role in cancer care, improving physical strength, mental wellbeing, and overall quality of life. Importantly, the discussions also focused on how these benefits can be made accessible to people across Ireland, including those in regional and rural communities.
SETU researchers and students were actively involved, showcasing the University’s strong links with the region and its commitment to research that delivers real-world impact. Contributions from cancer survivors added a powerful personal perspective, reinforcing the importance of community, support, and access to appropriate services.
The event concluded with a panel discussion led by Dr Patricia Sheehan, featuring Assistant Professor Ciarán Fairman, Professor Kathryn Schmitz, Professor Anna Campbell, and cancer survivor Anne-Marie Power.
Reflecting on the day, Dr Kira Murphy of UPMC Waterford, noted the sense of energy and collaboration in the room, emphasising that the real impact will come from the actions that follow.
By hosting events of this scale and significance, SETU continues to strengthen its role in the South East, connecting global expertise with regional needs, and helping to shape the future of healthcare in the community.
