Waterford Suir Valley Railway (WSVR) is pleased to announce significant progress in the restoration of Kettering Furnaces No. 3, as detailed in the newly released Restoration of Kettering Furnaces No. 3 Progress Report 2025–2026.

The ambitious steam restoration project, being expertly carried out by Northern Heritage Engineering in Darlington, UK, has already seen an investment of over €100,000 by WSVR. This milestone reflects the organisation’s deep commitment to preserving railway heritage and enhancing the visitor experience along the scenic Suir Valley line.

The restoration so far has been made possible thanks to the generous support of Waterford City & County Council, Clann Credo, local businesses, and the wider community. WSVR extends sincere thanks to all supporters who have contributed to bringing this historic locomotive closer to operational condition.

However, an additional €150,000 is required to complete the restoration. WSVR is now calling on the public, railway enthusiasts, and heritage supporters to help realise the vision of returning Kettering Furnaces No. 3 to steam.

Imagine once again the sight, sound, and atmosphere of a working steam locomotive travelling through the breathtaking Suir Valley, passing alongside Mount Congreve Gardens—renowned as one of the great gardens of the world. This project represents not only a restoration of machinery but a revival of living heritage.

Due to the nature of restoration and reliance on fundraising, WSVR cannot yet confirm a definitive date for the return of steam operations. Following completion, staff and volunteers will undergo specialised training to operate steam services, which require a distinct and advanced skillset compared to current diesel operations.

In parallel with the locomotive restoration, significant infrastructure developments are underway at Kilmeadan Station. These include:

  • Extension of the train shed to house the locomotive, funded through a Dormant Accounts grant aimed at supporting social enterprise development
  • Installation of a new siding
  • Construction of water towers and an ash pit
John Norris, Chair of the Waterford & Suir Valley Railway Company CLG board, commented: "While definite dates cannot be given, the future plan is to have Kettering Furnaces No. 3 in Kilmeadan by 2027. It will be available for training and test runs. When not in use it will be exhibited at the station. The hope is to have all infrastructure in place, any necessary certificates granted, and for WSVR to operate special steam gala days by Summer 2028."

He continued: "We are very grateful to the National Trust UK for entrusting us with this special locomotive. We take the responsibility very seriously. There are several parts of the locomotive that have to be replaced. Those elements that cannot be restored will be kept in accordance with museum best practice, which is important given the age of this works engine."

WSVR invites everyone with an interest in heritage, engineering, or community development to support this unique project. Donations of any size will directly contribute to bringing steam back to the Suir Valley.
