Following the success in 2023 with the DataIQ ‘Data for society’ Award win, alongside its evolving innovations in ethical and responsible AI, Trilateral were shortlisted in four categories at this year’s awards:

  • WIN | Best use of data for not-for-profit or non-commercial purposes | “Unlocking insights: Supporting survivors of modern slavery”
  • WIN | Data-enabling solution of the year (enabler) | “STRIAD:AIR: From data to action in County Meath”
  • COMMENDATION | AI and data for good hero organisation | “Harnessing AI and data for good: Combatting complex social problems with ethical AI”
  • Best ethical data initiative | “Ethics-by-design: Revolutionising responsible AI”
In attendance to represent Trilateral at this year’s ceremony were Kush Wadwha (CEO), Sarah Alderton (Director, Corporate Services), Nancy Baker (CFO), Dr Rachel Finn (Head of Irish Operations) and Raffaele Loseto (Head of Engineering):

Best use of data for not-for-profit or non-commercial purposes
Trilateral’s RESTART project is an outstanding example of how data can be used for not-for-profit purposes, showcasing the transformative power of technology in unlocking untapped survivor-centric insights within Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs). The project addressed a critical challenge faced by NGOs, enabling efficient extraction of valuable data that has long been obscured due to resource constraints. This approach enabled one partner – Causeway – to navigate volumes of information, identify real-time trends, and enhance their ability to provide impactful support. It also allowed another partner, Aberystwyth University, to develop evidenced based policy recommendations for better supporting survivors of modern slavery.

On winning the ‘Best use of data for not-for-profit or non-commercial purposes’ Award, Trilateral’s Head of Programme – Exploitation and Violence, Dr Julia Muraszkiewicz commented:

“Working on Project RESTART was truly a privilege. I have worked with survivors of trafficking, exploitation and violence for a number of years now, and this was the first time I came to actually see how AI could make a real difference by harnessing the stories they tell us every day. Human trafficking and modern slavery are global issues, and we have barely begun to understand how technology can support our efforts in tackling such crimes. But with Project RESTART we have been able to demonstrate a way forward – I look forward to continuing our efforts in this area and using the innovations at Trilateral to drive real change.”

Data-enabling solution of the year (enabler)
While 70% of people agree with the UK’s 2050 net zero emissions target, local projects often struggle to win support.  Trilateral’s STRIAD:AIR AI solution uses innovative methods to turn raw air pollution and health data into motivating messages, enabling climate action by highlighting the health and financial costs of air pollution in hyperlocal areas. This data and messaging is showcased at community events and in schools. Using STRIAD:AIR in County Meath, Ireland, it is estimated that if every council in Ireland reduced air pollution by 20%, more than 360 lives would be saved per year, reducing costs to the Health Service Executive by €18 million annually.

On winning the ‘Data-enabling solution of the year (enabler)’ Award, Head of Irish Operations, Dr Rachel Finn commented:

“Our work on STRAID: AIR was a fantastic opportunity to use predictive tools, like AI, to be a positive force in the fight against climate change. Linking air pollution to healthcare data really highlighted how small adjustments can make meaningful change in our communities. This is the first step in our climate action programme, and we are looking forward to applying AI to a range of air pollution challenges.”

Trilateral Research strives to achieve positive societal impact through Responsible AI. This is an ambitious mission but, with success in multiple categories at this year’s DataIQ Awards, it is clear that it is a mission that is both inspiring and achievable.

Trilateral began its AI journey eight years ago and has led the way in creating innovative solutions to the world’s most critical challenges. The team at Trilateral is dedicated to continuing these efforts.  On the success of Trilateral at this year’s DataIQ Awards, CEO Kush Wadhwa commented:

“Winning in multiple categories this evening is truly humbling. Taking an ethical, responsible approach to the development and implementation of AI is certainly not the easy road. And yet it is the right one, and one that the team at Trilateral have had the focus and determination to lead the way on since 2018.  Working with our partners at Causeway and Aberystwyth University on Project RESTART, and our colleagues in County Meath on STRIAD:AIR and Lincolnshire Police on CESIUM, along with numerous others demonstrates our values clearly. Our sociotech approach ensures a human-centric, scalable method is at the heart of everything we do – and it is a method that works.  I was also quite proud of the ‘Highly Commended’ award that we were presented – even though we didn’t take home the highest award in this category, getting the nod for the work our team does as a ‘hero organisation’ is a real achievement and I speaks to the care and passion our team brings to the work we do to have real, positive impact in the world. I look forward to continuing our efforts; innovating groundbreaking solutions that lead the way in responsible, ethical AI.”
