Dovida Waterford calls to ‘look out’ for older relatives this Christmas
The flu season has started early, and it’s said to be a bad strain this year. Dovida Waterford is recommending the public encourage older relatives and neighbours to get vaccinated this season.
Dr. Colm Henry, chief clinical officer of the HSE, said the influenza season has come to Ireland earlier than normal and will be at least as challenging as it was last year, which was a season that recorded particularly high numbers of flu infections. Dr Henry said the weekly hospitalised numbers would peak at somewhere between 750 and 1,500 inpatients who have influenza, with the peak expected on Christmas week or in the first week of January.
“Keeping older relatives safe at home and out of the hospital starts with family intervention,” said Steven Tubbritt, General Manager of Dovida Waterford. “It could be as simple as making sure your parents, grandparents or older relatives are using assistive equipment to avoid falls or suggesting they see a doctor for any new aches or symptoms. And certainly to get vaccinated. “Families play a critical role in making sure they fully understand and comply with medical instructions. Dovida careers will always prioritise care to the most vulnerable during times of adverse weather conditions i.e. those who live alone. If you are unable to help out with your loved one, please let your home care provider know.”
Steven continued, “For many older people, Christmas can be an extremely lonely time. Research shows that making the effort to keep in touch can make a big difference to older people. Loneliness is a serious condition which can be hugely damaging, mentally, physically and emotionally. “When you’re home over the holiday period and visiting your older neighbours and relatives, be aware of the things that may be changing for them. Be ready to spot the signs and help them get the support they need to remain happy and safe in their own home as long as possible.”
