Commenting on the latest Waterford Airport development, Gerald Hurley, CEO Waterford Chamber said: “The chaos at Dublin Airport at the weekend has proven to people why regional airports are so important and a positive investment plan announcement couldn’t be timelier.
“Waterford is being marketed internationally through Visit Waterford as a major tourist destination and this investment and the runway extension which will follow, will open up the whole region for commercial travel.
“From a business perspective we know from our members that a fully functioning airport is high up on their priority lists. It’s one of the key elements which will help Waterford develop its potential as the economic driver for the region and attract foreign investment.
“In terms of the new SETU, we understand from the new President Veronica Campbell that attracting global students, researchers and academics will be a key part of SETU’s strategic plan and a fully operational airport will certainly support that.
“There are also a wealth of business opportunities that could open up around the Airport, not least cargo and private aircrafts but also aircraft maintenance and related services.”
