Get ready for some powerhouse live music gigs this summer as Theatre Royal Waterford’s intimate Backstage venue hosts some of the best and brightest original acts around.

One of Ireland’s finest singer songwriters, Niall McCabe, kicks off the Backstage summer programme on Friday, 7th July. Having released his eagerly anticipated solo album last year, Niall has recently been touring with Irish trad-fusion band Beoga, whilst also playing support for Ed Sheeran, Foy Vance and Johnny Swim.

On Saturday, 8th July, Backstage hosts Nick Kelly, who first came to prominence fronting The Fat Lady Sings (‘Arclight’, ‘Drunkard Logic’ and ‘Deborah’). Since then, he’s embarked upon fresh musical chapters, with ‘Alien Envoy’, ‘The Unelectables’ and ‘Dogs’ with his friend and fellow-songwriter Sean “Doctor” Millar, featuring a set drawn from the noisiest corners of Nick and Sean’s combined back catalogues.

Vague, an original music project by Waterford musicians featuring Cilian Jacob (Divorce Party), Ken Lally (Divorce Part, Rain Dogs, Hurricane), Killian Browne (Toucan, Backroad Smokers Clubs, Cal Pacino) and Eddie Blake (Anna Liese, Oran Byrne, Dave O’Sullivan) will launch their debut single Backstage on 11th August. Taking inspiration from soul, pop, funk, folk, punk and jazz, Vague’s influences include David Bowie, Chet Baker, Randy Newman, Blur, Van Morrison, The Clash, Paul Simon, The Band, Nina Simone, Talking Heads and more.

Fresh from releasing their second album, ‘Neon Hip’, and supporting The Frames at the Marquee, West Cork alt-rockers First Class & Coach will be joined by special guests One Morning in August on 12th August. Finally, Waterford band Superstar Nomads and Fintan Scanlon play a double header on 19th August.
