The Men’s Support Group in the Solas Cancer Support Centre were delighted to be contacted by the team in Suir Engineering with the kind offer of fruits trees. The trees are part of a nationwide Host in Ireland project that aims to help protect bees and increase pollination and plans to plant in excess of 1,000 mixed fruit orchards all over Ireland.
David Phelan, Business Development Director at Suir Engineering explains more – ‘We are proud to be a part of the #DCsForBees 1000 'Orchards In The Community' Initiative. The orchard that we have planted in the Solas Cancer Support Centre is one of more than 1200 orchards across the country that will bring huge life support to our bees and other pollinators as they emerge searching for food each Spring’.
The Men’s Group in Solas meet each week to support each other around their own cancer experiences. They look after six raised beds planted with fruit and vegetables as well as the magnificent garden that they established in 2018.  Group Facilitator Tom Mullane explains how effective the group is: ‘The Men’s Group was established in Solas when the Centre opened in 2010. Since that time this weekly group offers friendship, laughter and camaraderie while also dealing with issues that the members face because of their individual diagnosis. During COVID restrictions the Men’s Group remained in contact remotely and we are all now delighted to be able to meet again in the Centre’.
