Today (November 18th) the family-run Mulligans Pharmacy Group opens 2 new stores in Waterford City and adds 20 new jobs to their existing team of 260.

A brand new 2,000 square foot pharmacy and a 30 seater café open in Ferrybank in the north of Waterford City opens in the coming week and on the South of the City at Kilbarry on the Tramore Road a new 4,000 square foot flagship Mulligans Pharmacy and Lifestyle store has now opened.

The move sees the company expand by 20 % within the last year as the store at Ferrybank in Waterford becomes the group’s 20th retail store for the group which already has 19 other stores across Waterford, Kilkenny, South Tipperary a recent pharmacy opening at Kilmacthomas and at Arnott’s in Dublin. Mulligans was first established by Jim and Sheila Mulligan in 1957 when they opened a pharmacy at George’s St in Waterford City. The family group will now employ 280 people across the region. The Irish family-run business is led by a second-generation of the family Ronan and Kate Mulligan.

The 4,000 square foot pharmacy and lifestyle store at Kilbarry is a luxurious flagship Mulligans Store offering a holistic, health and lifestyle range of producats and services. The store also sees the opening of Mulligans very first robot pharmacy service with an outdoor digital kiosk for customers offering a complete ‘click and collect’ service for all products that can be found at Mulligan’s, as the kiosk is fully serviced by robot technology.

This is another innovative step for the family-run pharmacy group having previously opened Ireland’s first drive-thru pharmacy in 2014 and Ireland’s first full-service department store pharmacy in 2021 at Arnott’s.

The high-tech service at Mulligans also manages customer collection deadlines and can keep customers and even carers informed ahead of repeat prescription pick-ups via the new Mulligan’s prescritpion App which is about to be launched. Advanced technology can be integrated fully with the pharmacy e-commerce website enabling the purchase of non-medicine products out of hours for pick up.

Commenting on the opening Ronan says, “We are delighted to be re-investing in our native Waterford and officially opening our 19th and 20th Mulligan’s Pharmacy stores.”

Speaking of the robotic technology Ronan says, “Primarily we are a people-oriented business and with that in mind we have for the past 65 years aimed at making the lives of our customers easier and ensuring the provision of the highest quality service. We view the addition of our authomated service as the next step in our customer-oriented brand, offering a fully accessible pharmacy service while in addition easing pressure on our pharmacist in store as this technology removes some of the tasks they would usually have to undertake, ultimately delivering a more efficient service for the customer and patient.

The technology at Mulligan’s will also enabled us to deliver another key service, which enables the autmated delivery of ‘blister packs’ which are becoming more of the norm for people with complex medical conditions and we aim to provide this service to our full store network and to care homes across the region.

The installation of our technology coupled with the addition of ecological friendly beauty, skin and healthcare products positions Milligans in line with the evolution of the shopping experience, one step ahead in health and well being with a sustainability mindset as we always we aim to be one step ahead of the future of shopping at Mulligan's.”

In addition to the full pharmacy offering, appointments can be made at the pharmacy health desk or online for express Covid-19 PCR and antigen testing, health screenings for Diabetes, and vitamin D testing, plus Flu and Covid-19 vaccination services. Patients can also virtually connect with a pharmacist via the soon-to-be-launched ‘Manage My Prescription’ App for any health queries and information.
